Jarawa Community

They are one of the indigenous people of Andaman Islands and are assumed to have inhabited the islands for thousands of years. Until about 1997, they largely kept themselves from the distant world. However, recently the interaction between them and the outside world has been increasing mainly due to the influx of tourists through the Great Andaman Trunk Road.

Population: 250-300

Risk: Contact with tourists may increase the risk of diseases in the tribe

Why in news?: Many tourism companies have used this community as a tourist attraction. This has invited protests from the media over their portrayal as a tourist attraction.

Gujjars

Gujjars are a tribal community found in North India. They have been in news recently for demand of ST status as well as their demand for a separate Pir Panchal region in J&K. They are also found in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Bakarwals

A nomadic tribe based in the Pir Pinjal and Himalayan mountains. They are called as Dhangar in rest of India. They are mainly shepherds. They migrate to hills in summer and to plains in winter.

Bhotia: A nomadic tribe in Himachal and Uttaranchal.
